The Hummingbird and the Gnat and Sugar Smoothie
VideoThis viedeo was shot by a wildlife rehabilitator and shows a juvenile ruby throated hummingbird drinking a "gnat & sugar smoothie" out of a test tube. You can see it stick out its tongue at the 12 second mark and start feeding at the 49 second mark. It is important to remember that hummingbirds can't live on sugar water alone. Hummingbirds in the wild eat hundreds of insects to supplement the nectar they drink. This hummingbird is not a pet and will be released back into the wild as an adult.
